Neil Patrick Harris Talks Tonys & 'Robarney'
Neil Patrick Harris will host "The 63rd Annual Tony® Awards" live from Radio City Music Hall Sunday, June 7 -- and he says he is looking to Hugh Jackman for inspiration.
"I am going to try and take a page off of Mr. Jackman's hosting duties the first season he did it. He wasn't on a ton, and didn't do a lot of performing. He just tried to make the audience feel welcome, and keep things running at a good clip," Neil tells ET.
The "How I Met Your Mother" star, who has several Broadway credits on his resume, modestly says he was surprised that he was asked to host, because he thought they would ask an A-List film star.
So can viewers expect a big opening number like the ones Billy Crystal is famous for at the Oscars®?
"They actually have a giant opening planned that is bigger than, I think, they have ever had in Tony history," he tells ET. "I actually don't think I am going to be involved in it. After it is done, I think they are going to introduce me. I will make some remarks and pretty much start the show."
Then Neil will return for the next season of "HIMYM," where his character, Barney, and Robin (Cobie Smulders) may resume the romance that started in last season's finale. Fans have already given them a name -- Robarney -- as if they were a soap opera super couple.
"If they want to write a long chapter with Barney and Robin together, I am sure they will maintain Barney being his normal self," he says. "No one on the show is looking to change the group dynamic. And yet that is an interesting wrinkle. I am sure they will play it as well as they have played other interesting chapters within the show. It could be two episodes and out. They could try to get together and see that it is a terrible idea and be friends. I am a big Cobie Smulders fan, so as much time as I get to spend with her, I am happy."
